Nomination and Selection Process

Nomination

The call for nominations begins at least one year prior to the date of its awarding. Individuals and groups can be nominated for the Dodd Prize by members of the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center's Advisory Board, by previous winners of the Dodd Prize and other prominent human rights organizations and practitioners, and members of the public. The Dodd Prize Selection Committee does not accept self-nominations.

Selection

Dodd Prize nominations are reviewed by a Selection Committee, composed of three members of the National Advisory Committee, the Director of the Dodd Center and three human rights specialists at the University of Connecticut.  The Selection Committee recommends no less than three and no more than five nominees to the full National Advisory Board.  The National Advisory Board reviews the recommended nominees and recommends a prize recipient to the President of the University of Connecticut.

Prize winners are selected based on a range of criteria, including:

  • Reputation of the nominee within the human rights community;

  • Reputation of the nominator within the human rights community;

  • Nominee's past and potential future impact on the realization of human rights and/or international justice;

  • Potential for Dodd Prize to enhance the impact of the nominee's work; and

  • Alignment between the nominee's work and the strengths of the University's human rights program.

Anticipated Timetable

  • May, 2018 - Nomination material distributed and nominations solicited.
  • December 3, 2018 - All nominations must be received at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center.
  • December 15, 2019 - All nominations distributed to Dodd Prize Selection Committee for Review.
  • January 15, 2019 - Dodd Prize Selection Committee recommends one or more candidates to the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center's Advisory Board.
  • February 15, 2019 - The Dodd Advisory Board meets to review Dodd Prize Selection Committee recommendation and selects a nominee for the Dodd Prize. The name of the nominee is forwarded to the President of the University of Connecticut.
  • March 1, 2019 - Dodd Prize recipient(s) notified and scheduling begins for fall 2019 awarding of the Dodd Prize.
  • October/November, 2019 - Dodd Prize Award Ceremony held at University of Connecticut, Storrs.
